5-plus benefits of tooth-colored fillings in Battle Creek, MI

Modern dentistry presents many options for patients with cavities who need to have them treated with dental fillings. At Earl E. Gaball, DDS in Battle Creek, MI, we have added to our available choices for dental fillings; we haven’t taken away or opted only to offer tooth-colored or composite fillings. After all, we appreciate that every patient is different and has varying needs and preferences. There may be situations where other types of fillings are more appropriate. Factors such as the location of the damaged tooth will play a role in our treatment recommendations.

Also known as “white” fillings, tooth-colored fillings are generally well-suited to many patients’ needs and goals because they:

  • Blend in well with the surrounding dentition
  • Do not contain metal. And are suitable for patients with sensitivities to metal alloys used in other types of fillings.
  • Preserve maximum natural tooth structure, which supports the most natural feel in the mouth and optimal function.
  • Do not degrade; the tooth-like color is sustained over time without the graying or darkening associated with its counterparts formulated with metals.
  • They are durable and long-lasting with good oral hygiene at home and regular hygiene appointments at our office – no special care or tools are required to sustain their appearance and durability.

As a conservative filling option, very little natural tooth structure is removed or altered to prepare the damaged site to be “filled in.” After the composite is perfectly color-matched to the surrounding teeth, it is added in layers to the damaged area. As each layer is applied, it is hardened using a special curing light. Since the material is applied directly to the tooth, it preserves maximum natural structure.

Indirect fillings designed and prepared outside of the mouth generally require that more natural tooth structure be drilled away to allow for adequate room for the restoration. These fillings include amalgams made from a combination of metals and cast gold. Each filling type has its advantages and disadvantages, which we’re happy to share with you during a consultation scheduled at our office in Battle Creek.

Adjustments to home care may be sufficient to remineralize the tooth, or we may recommend an inlay or onlay (partial crown) instead of a large filling, which is more vulnerable to breakage.
